Starlight (real name Annie January) is the love interest of Hughie Campbell in the comic book series The Boys, as well as the television series of the same name.
Biography[]
Born with superhuman abilities, Annie January was pushed into becoming a superhero by her fame-hungry mother. She joined a team with a Christian motif that preached wholesome values, but was eventually accepted into the Seven, a team of the most elite superhumans in the world. To Starlight's horror, part of her initiation was to perform oral sex on one of her new teammates.
Disillusioned, Annie wandered the streets of New York, where she met Hughie. Hughie had recently lost his girlfriend due to the careless actions of a superhuman, so the two of them licked each other's wounds. Eventually they developed real feelings for each other and became an official couple. Unbeknownst to Starlight, Hughie was working with a vigilante team that was trying to wipe out the Seven. Their leader Billy Butcher caught wind of the two and undermined their relationship, leading to the two of them splitting up over trust issues.
In the comics, Hughie is the one who leaves Starlight after seeing video footage of her being forced to perform oral sex on the superhuman that killed his girlfriend and mistakenly assuming she had consented. In the series, Starlight leaves Hughie after finding out who he was working with. The two do eventually patch things up in the comics, but in the series they're currently putting their relationship on hold to avoid conflicts of interest while holding out hope of eventually getting back together.
Personality[]
Starlight is an idealistic young woman with Christian values who genuinely wants to use her powers to make the world a better place. She experiences several moments of disillusionment over her character arc, both in terms of her career and in her faith. She finds out that superheroes are little more than a business that covers up some horrific deeds for the sake of public image, alongside walking away from Christianity due to its overbearing attitude towards sex and lack of guidance when she really needs it.
In spite of everything she deals with, Starlight never fully gives into despair or corruption, wishing to preserve any kind of decency she can find.
