"Tell me, do I look like a good girl?"
―Sand Saref

Sand Saref is one of the many love interests of the titular character in the 2008 Neo-noir superhero film The Spirit. She is the childhood sweetheart of Denny Colt, who left Central City after the death of her father to live a life of luxury, funded by a criminal lifestyle and a slew of deceased husbands. She returns for her latest scheme, which puts her directly in the cross-hairs of The Octopus and unbeknown to her, the reborn Denny Colt aka The Spirit.

She was portrayed by Eva Mendes (and Seychelle Gabriel as a teenager).

History[]

Young Sand Saref dreamed of leaving the dead end, corrupt Central City and often fantasised about being a wealthy woman, driving sports cars and wearing diamonds. This is what started her obsession with shiny things. She live with her doting policeman father and found comfort in her best friend Denny Colt, who began a romantic relationship after he gave her a locket with their photographs inside.

One night, Denny's uncle, a boxer, gets is in a fight with a mobster who accidentally shoots Sand's father dead. Denny's uncle, out of fear and guilt, shoots himself and people believe he committing the crime. This drove a wedge between Denny and a heartbroken Sand, who yells to the reporters that she hates cops. Sand argues with Denny, who himself wants to be a policeman and at that moment decides to leave Central City and never return.

Years later and on her seventh or eighth husband, Sand returns to Central City in order to get the shiniest item in the world, the armor of Heracles. However, she is double crossed by her fence Donenfeld who rats her out to The Octopus, who is after the blood of Heracles which is in the same loot. The Octopus shoots at Sand but she is able to escape. He chases after her and manages to get one of the crates of treasures while she makes off with the other. Sand confronts Donenfeld and blackmails him into killing himself as revenge for the betrayal. The police investigate Donenfeld's death, leading the Spirit to confront her. In the heat of it, he confesses that he is Denny but she refuses to believe it due to her knowing about his death years later. In a struggle she accidentally pushes him out of a window and makes her getaway.

Sand wants the armor back and sends a message to The Octopus in order to arrange a meet-up and exchange their items. He agrees and sends his assistant Silken Floss and two henchman to meet with her instead. Sand, with a new husband, arrives at the meet-up and finally sees the glorious, golden treasure she has always wanted. But as her husband is about to give up the vase of blood he is shot dead by a henchman and The Octopus emerges. Sand pleads for Silken to get out of danger and she drives away.

As The Octopus is about to kill Sand, the police show up and intervene, shooting him several times with all of the weapons at their disposal. Sand hides while they shoot at him. The Spirit appears to finish the job but is shot by two large revolvers The Octopus pulls out and is seemingly killed. He is just about to drink the blood of Heracles when Sand shoots the vase, smashing it instantly and the blood fades into nothing.

The Spirit rises and is shown to be wearing a bulletproof vest and tells her to hide and use the armor of Heracles. He pulls out a hand grenade and forces it into The Octopus' body, fully prepared to allow them both to die in order to stop him. Just before the explosion, Sand pulls out the glowing golden chainmail of Heracles and uses it to shield themselves from the blast.

With The Octopus blown to pieces and the two of them safe, the old flames say their goodbyes and share a passionate kiss before she departs. The Commissioner wants to chase after her and arrest her but The Spirit convinces him to let her escape.
