Sophie Dumond is the love interest of Arthur Fleck in the film Joker.

Biography

Sophie is a single mother living in the slums of Gotham City. She's neighbours with Arthur and his mother Penny.

Arthur pines for Sophie from afar and stalks her in broad daylight, which Sophie notices. She confronts Arthur about this, but rather than be angry, she flirts with him. Arthur tells her that he's an amateur comedian and invites her to his next stand-up routine.

After Arthur is forced to kill three men that attacked him, he rushes to Sophie's place and kisses her passionately. They become an official couple after that.

Sophie takes Arthur up on his offer to see his stand-up, which he nearly blows when he gets stagefright before finding his bearings. Afterwards, Sophie talks about the triple homicide from the other night without realising Arthur was the killer, expressing little sympathy for the victims due to their high status and general unpleasantness.

When Arthur's mother has a stroke and is ruched to hospital, Sophie accompanies him. Arthur later digs into his mother's past and finds evidence that not only is she not his real mother, but Arthur isn't even his real name. He goes back to Sophie's apartment hoping to find some comfort, only to see that Sophie is startled by the sight of him. It then hits him that the Sophie he connected with previously was just a hallucination from going on and off medication. Sophie pleads with him to leave, which he does. They never interact again after this.

• The name "Sophie Dumond" is never mentioned in the film itself. Just the end credits.
• Audiences have speculated on what happened to Sophie after her final appearance. Some assumed that the man who eventually became Joker killed her, though the screenwriters have gone on record saying that he just left her alone after that.
