Background[]

Asuna comes from a wealthy family consisting of her parents and older brother, where her father is the President of RECT. Inc. Since childhood, she grew up with Sugou Nobuyuki, but unknownst to her parents, she secretly hates him as he sexually harasses Asuna. Eventually at some point, Asuna's parents decided he would be her future partner while still completely oblivious of his true nature. Asuna has a complicated relationship with her family as she has a strained relationship with her mother, but is more close to her father. Asuna also had a close bond with her grandparents on her mother's side, always going to their home for summer holidays. As for education, she attended an all-girls school. On the day Sword Art Online was released, Asuna's brother intended to buy the game for himself, but had to attend business meetings, and thus allowed Asuna to enjoy the game instead. Due to this, Asuna along with everyone became trapped in Sword Art Online.

Sugou Nobuyuki[]

Sugou Nobuyuki is Asuna's former arranged fiancé and the main antagonist of the Fairy Dance arc. Prior to the beginning of the series, Asuna's parents had arranged for her to marry Sugou Nobuyuki, a close family friend from childhood. However, ever since childhood, Asuna has always hated Sugou as unknown to everyone as she knew that Sugou is nothing but troublemaking bully, he was secretly a pervert as he would sexually harass Asuna. Despite knowing full well of Asuna's hatred towards him as well as her refusal of their arranged marriage, Sugou continued his perverted pursuits of having Asuna for himself as well as taking control of her father's company. However, Sugou's plans were halted when Asuna became imprisoned in the virtual world, Sword Art Online.

Asuna and Sugou S1E17 (1)

Sugou informs Asuna of his plot.

Two years later when Sword Art Online was cleared and the players were freed, Asuna and 300 other players of SAO were captured by Sugou Nobuyuki. Due to his position at Asuna's father's company, RECT Progress and having previously having gained the SAO servers and technology, Sugou managed to rerout 300 SAO survivors, including Asuna and imprisoned them inside his own virtual world ALfheim Online. He wanted to use the 300 players as test subjects for illegal experiments on the human brain and then he would sell the information he gained to other companies in America. When he captured Asuna, Sugou resumed his plans to marry her. However, knowing Asuna would reject him if he proposed and upon discovering she had fallen deeply in love with Kirito during her time in SAO, Sugou created an alternative plan. Sugou decided to keep Asuna imprionsed in ALfheim Online at the top of the World Tree inside a bird cage while making her the character Queen Titania, the bride to his character King Oberon, the ruler of ALfheim. Since Asuna continued to remain trapped in the virtual world and thus remained in a coma in real world, Sugou would take the time to convince her family to allow him marry Asuna while she is still alive without any interferences. Two months later after SAO was cleared, preparations for Asuna and Sugou's marriage began with their wedding ceremony arranged to take place a week later.

Since her capture, Sugou would resume sexually harassing Asuna to his own personal enjoyment. Sugou was shown to be obsessive of Asuna, going to far as to replicate her appearance and even natural scent into her ALO avatar. Sugou would inappropriately touch her and smell her hair while making her avatar's clothing revealing. However, Sugou grew tired of Asuna's hurt feelings, expressing his opinion that she was being ridiculous regarding his advances, believing he wasn't truly hurting her, seeing her ALO avatar isn't her real body. Sugou also believed the more Asuna remained trapped in ALO, she would eventually come to lose herself and would love him while also making several attempts for Asuna to accept their soon to be marriage. Sugou's attempts were to no avail as Asuna constantly rejected his advances and kept her composure whenever Sugou began to sexually harass her, knowing full well he wanted her to react. However, while she tried to keep her composure, Asuna would still show how much Sugou's perverted actions upset her, shown on several occasions that she was on the verge of tears. Overall though despite her situation, Asuna continued to remain strong, brave and hopeful that she would somehow managed to escape and knowing full well Kirito would save her.

Asuna and Sugou S1E24

Sugou begins to abuse Asuna.

While Sugou was already well aware of the relationship between Asuna and Kirito, he believed Kirito held no threat to free Asuna or ruin his plans. Ultimately, Sugou believed Kirito would be to afraid to ever use the NerveGear again and constantly taunted and attempts to crush Asuna's hopes and ideas of Kirito ever being able to rescue her and kept trying to force Asuna to love him. Despite his attempts, Asuna continued to voice her true feelings to Sugou, expressing her hatred and disgust of him while affirming her love and heart belong only to Kirito and instead, Sugou's attempt to crush Asuna's hopes backfired as she became more hopeful upon learning of Kirito's survival from SAO. Eventually, Kirito and Asuna were finally reunited, but Sugou attacked the pair and decided he would manipulate their minds. However, wanting to cause true suffering to the couple, Sugou chained Asuna and began to sexual abuse her while a helpless Kirito couldn't do anything, but watched as Sugou began to torture and torment Asuna to his full desires and enjoyment. Sugou tore apart Asuna's clothing and revealed his plans to record their time together in the game. However, his plan and desires wouldn't stop there, informing Asuna once he returns to the real world, he will visit her in the hospital to reenact their time together in ALO with Asuna's real body, much to her horror.

Kirito was left angered and heartbroken by Sugou's actions, seeing he was helpless to rescue or protect Asuna from his torment and began to cry as he watched her suffering. Due to this, Kirito almost came to lose complete hope in himself and his skills, believing he was exaggerating himself. Thankfully after being encouraged and hope renewed by the spirit of Akihiko Kayaba, Kirito managed to defeated Sugou before he could cause any further harm or torment to Asuna. Since ALO was basically a alternative version of SAO, Kirito gained access to the game using Healthcliff's SAO ID and proceeded to fight Sugou, making him pay for all his horrible acts against Asuna and defeated him in the game. Soon after, Kirito at long last finally freed Asuna from the virtual world and retuned her to the real world. Shortly after one last fight in the real world and defeating Sugou once and for all, Asuna no longer needed to worry as Sugou was arrested for his crimes and from then on, Asuna could finally enjoy life in the real world and happily be with Kirito once again.
