Love interests typically have glamorous occupations. Actresses and models are usually considered unapproachable for an everyman protagonist, so the next closest thing usually ends up being a news reporter or journalist.

These types of love interests are typically a double-whammy: they're photogenic enough to catch someone's eye, and intelligent enough to stand out as their own character. The best example of all would be Lois Lane.
